Before you go
- Chembra Peak has been indefinitely closed since the July 30, 2024 Wayanad landslides that devastated the Meppadi trailhead area (250+ deaths); verify reopening with the Meppadi Forest Office or ecotourism.forest.kerala.gov.in before building any itinerary around this trek — the Jun–Sep monsoon is not the only closure risk.
- The 80 daily Chembra permits sell out well before noon on weekends and holidays; arrive by 05:30, and call the Meppadi office the evening before to confirm the weekly off-day (reported as Sunday, but unconfirmed).
- Monsoon (Jun–Sep) closes Chembra, Kuruva Island, and many resort access roads; leeches make trails unpleasant even in late May and early October.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Calicut (Kozhikode) International Airport (CCJ) — nearest hub; ~2.5 h by road to Kalpetta (80 km). Kannur Airport (CNN) is 3 h. Kochi (COK) is 5.5 h — use only if combining with Munnar or backwaters.
By rail — Kozhikode Junction — well-connected to Bangalore (Intercity/express ~7 h), Chennai (12 h), Mumbai (22 h). Taxi or KSRTC bus from station to Kalpetta ~2.5 h (75 km on NH212).
By road — From Bangalore: NH766 via Mysore, ~250 km, 5–5.5 h. From Kochi: NH544 + SH15 via Sultan Bathery, ~280 km, 5.5–6 h. Roads are ghat-section switchbacks — avoid night driving.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no inner-line or protected-area permit anywhere in Wayanad. Chembra Peak trek permits (₹75/person; ₹750 per group of 10, ₹75 per additional person) plus forest entry (₹20/person) and a shared guide fee (₹150/guide) are issued exclusively at the Meppadi Forest Office ticket window (07:00–12:00); only 80 slots are available daily and sell out well before noon on peak weekends, so arrive by 05:30–06:00. The office is reported to operate Monday–Saturday with Sunday off, but the weekly off-day is unconfirmed — call the evening before to verify; Chembra has also been indefinitely closed since the July 30, 2024 landslides (Meppadi area, 250+ deaths), so reconfirm reopening status with the Meppadi Forest Office or ecotourism.forest.kerala.gov.in before including it in any itinerary. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary jeep safari is walk-in only (no online booking exists) at ₹110/person entry plus ₹600/jeep for up to 7 passengers (≈₹200–210/person total); arrive at the range-office counter at least 30 minutes before the morning session (07:00–10:00) or evening session (15:00–17:00). Kuruva Island entry is ₹220/person for Indian adults; Thirunelli Temple is free but non-Hindus may not enter the temple building or inner courtyard and are limited to the outer grounds and the Papanasini stream path. All three sites close June–September for monsoon.
