Tawang Monastery
Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh · 3,048 m
Stand inside the largest monastery in India — a 400-year-old citadel of Tibetan Buddhism perched above cloud-filled valleys on the edge of the Himalayas, where the 6th Dalai Lama was born.
Tawang delivers an immersive Tibetan Buddhist cultural experience on Indian soil — ancient monastery, living monastic community, and dramatic 4,000 m passes — without crossing an international border. The 1962 Indo-China war history adds a layer of gravity that makes it unlike any other Himalayan destination in India.

What you'll see & do
The sights worth the trip, and how to spend the days around them.
To see
- Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgyal Lhatse) — 17th-century fortress-monastery, 450 monks, priceless thangkas
- Sela Pass — 4,170 m road pass with glacial lake; often snow-covered even in May
- Nuranang / Jang Falls — 100 m cascade off the Tawang Chu, roadside drama on the Sela approach
- PT Tso (Shonga-tser Lake) — migratory waterfowl lake 17 km south, spectacular Oct-Nov
To do
- Attend early-morning prayer (puja) session inside Tawang Monastery's Dukhang hall with monks
- Drive or hike to Bumla Pass border point (4,380 m) with army escort — Oct to Apr only
- Birdwatching at PT Tso for bar-headed geese and Brahminy ducks in October-November
- Shop the old Tawang market for handwoven yak-wool carpets, thankas, and butter lamps
Before you go
- The eILP costs ₹300–₹500 (not free) and processing runs 24–72 hours normally, up to 4–5 days in peak season — apply at least 3 days ahead at eilp.arunachal.gov.in; walk-in collection is at Bhalukpong checkpost on NH-13, which is the actual Assam–Arunachal border entry point on the Tawang route.
- The Bumla Pass permit for Indian nationals is a local DC-office permit countersigned by the Indian Army — not a Protected Area Permit (PAP), which applies only to foreign nationals; arrange it in Tawang the day before through your accommodation or a local operator, as it cannot be collected at the pass gate.
- Bumla Pass is open May–October and closed November–April due to heavy snowfall; July–September is technically open but road conditions deteriorate under monsoon, so May–June or October are the most reliable windows.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Fly to Tezpur (TEZ) — IndiGo/Air India operate from Guwahati (30 min) and Delhi (2.5 hrs); from Tezpur drive ~9 hrs to Tawang. Alternatively Guwahati (GAU) + 12-14 hr road with overnight halt in Bomdila.
By rail — Nearest railhead Rangapara North (near Tezpur) on Northeast Frontier Railway; trains from Guwahati (~3.5 hrs), then 9 hrs road to Tawang. No direct rail connection to Arunachal Pradesh.
By road — Guwahati → Tezpur → Bomdila → Sela Pass → Tawang; ~500 km, typically done in 2 days with overnight halt at Dirang or Bomdila. Sela Tunnel (opened 2024) cuts 1-2 hrs off Sela Pass transit in clear weather; mountain roads require 4WD SUV.
On a Driftibo trip we handle the transfers.
Permits & entry — All Indian nationals must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) before entering Arunachal Pradesh; apply online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in. The eILP costs ₹300 for up to 3 days or ₹500 for up to 14 days; processing takes 24–72 working hours normally and up to 4–5 days in peak season, so apply at least 3 days before travel. Walk-in same-day collection is available at Bhalukpong checkpost on NH-13 at the Assam–Arunachal boundary. For Bumla Pass, Indian nationals require a separate local restricted-zone permit issued by the Deputy Commissioner's office in Tawang and countersigned by the Indian Army (approximately ₹100 per person, roughly one day to arrange through a hotel, homestay, or local operator); this permit cannot be obtained at the pass gate. Bumla Pass is open May–October and closed November–April due to heavy snowfall. Tawang Monastery charges no entry fee but enforces a dress code (covered shoulders and knees, shoes removed at shrine entrances) and prohibits photography inside the Dukhang hall during active prayers.
