Tawang pairs India's largest Buddhist monastery — a living, functioning 17th-century complex — with some of the Eastern Himalaya's most dramatic high-altitude scenery, including 4,600m border passes and glacial alpine lakes. It is the least crowded major Himalayan destination in India, offering Ladakh-calibre landscapes with a fraction of the tourist footfall and a distinct Monpa-Tibetan cultural layer found nowhere else.

- ILP is mandatory before crossing at Bhalukpong — tourists are turned back without one; apply at eilp.arunachal.gov.in (not arunachalpermit.nic.in, which is the wrong domain), fees are ₹300 for up to 3 days or ₹500 for up to 14 days, and carry 3–4 printed copies since checkpost staff at Bhalukpong, Bomdila, and the Tawang approach typically reject digital-only copies.
- The Sela Tunnel (opened March 2024, approximately 3,000m elevation) now bypasses the open-air Sela Pass and keeps the Tawang corridor accessible in most weather; if you plan the open-air pass viewpoint as a sightseeing stop, note that the road there can still close 12–48 hours with zero warning after heavy snowfall November–March, so build one slack day into the itinerary for that leg.
- The altitude in Tawang reaches 3,048m — a rest night at Dirang (1,500m) on the way up is standard practice to reduce acclimatisation risk, especially for travellers arriving from sea level.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Fly to Guwahati (GAU) or Tezpur (TEZ); Tezpur is the closer gateway — ~320 km, 8–9 hrs by road to Tawang via Bomdila and Sela Pass
By rail — Rangapara North (Assam) is the nearest railhead; shared taxis to Tezpur (~1.5 hrs), then 7–8 hr drive onward; Guwahati rail-to-road is 10–11 hrs total
By road — NH-13 from Tezpur via Bhalukpong, Bomdila (165 km, 5 hrs), then Sela Pass to Tawang; night halt at Dirang strongly recommended; total driving time Tezpur–Tawang 8–9 hrs in good conditions

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) before crossing into Arunachal Pradesh; apply online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in (₹300 for up to 3 days, ₹500 for 4–14 days), with offline issuance also available at Arunachal Bhawans, liaison offices, and DC offices including Bhalukpong. Carry 3–4 printed copies; digital copies on a phone are not accepted at most checkposts. Bum La Pass requires an additional Special Bumla Permit, obtained at the DC office in Tawang town and countersigned by the Indian Army; processing takes 30–40 minutes but must be initiated the day before your visit before 5 PM — arrange through your driver or hotel on Day 1 of arrival. The Bumla permit fee is approximately ₹100 per person; a minimum group of 2 Indian adults is consistently cited by operators but has not been confirmed against an official government source — verify locally on arrival. An army escort joins the group at the War Memorial checkpost en route, not from Tawang town; the pass is open approximately May–October, subject to army clearance and weather, so confirm 48 hours ahead. Sela Tunnel (opened March 2024, elevation approximately 3,000m) provides an all-weather bypass around the open-air Sela Pass (4,170m) and eliminates most winter isolation risk for the Tawang corridor; the open-air pass road itself can still close for 12–48 hours after heavy snowfall November–March with no advance notice.
