Before you go
- The Manali route via Kunzum La (NH-505) typically closes by mid-October — it closed mid-October in both 2024 and 2025 after early snowfall — and does not reopen until late May to early June depending on BRO clearance; a cloudburst during open season can block the road for 12–36 hours with no detour, so build one slack day into any September–October itinerary and check BRO and district road status each morning.
- Kaza sits at 3,800 m and Komic at 4,587 m; one mandatory rest day on arrival and a Diamox prescription obtained before departure are non-negotiable.
- Rohtang Pass is closed every Tuesday for maintenance and no tourist permits are issued that day; clients whose Manali departure falls on a Tuesday must leave on Monday or wait until Wednesday — clients using the Atal Tunnel are unaffected by both the Tuesday closure and the 1,200-vehicle daily quota.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Fly to Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali) or Shimla — both ~45 min from Delhi; then drive 8–10 hrs to Kaza via Manali-Rohtang-Kunzum or 12–14 hrs via Shimla-Kinnaur-Sumdo; no airport in Spiti
By rail — Train to Kalka then Kalka-Shimla toy train (5 hrs) + 13 hrs road to Kaza; or overnight express to Chandigarh, then bus/taxi to Shimla and onward road
By road — Manali → Kaza via Rohtang & Kunzum Pass: ~200 km, 8–10 hrs, open mid-Jun to mid-Oct; Shimla → Kaza via Kinnaur NH-505: ~410 km, 13–15 hrs, open Apr–Nov; Kinnaur route is longer but more reliable

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no inner-line permit for Kaza, Key, Tabo, Dhankar, Kibber, or Komic; carry a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, voter card, or passport) for routine police registration at checkposts, including Sumdo (registration only, not a permit). Vehicles entering Lahaul & Spiti via the Atal Tunnel — the standard Manali–Spiti route since 2020 — do not need a Rohtang Pass sightseeing permit, but must complete a free E-Aagman vehicle entry registration at eaagman.hp.gov.in before departure (no fee, two minutes); have the reference number ready at the tunnel entrance. If clients choose the old Rohtang Pass road instead of the tunnel, an online vehicle permit is required at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in; the fee is ₹550 per vehicle total (₹500 permit + ₹50 congestion charge) regardless of passenger count — a group of four in one car pays ₹550, not per person; the daily quota is 1,200 vehicles (800 petrol, 400 diesel) released in two windows, so book 3–5 days ahead in July–August, and note that the pass is closed every Tuesday for maintenance with no permits issued on that day. Pin Valley National Park charges ₹50 per person for Indian nationals. Tabo meditation caves are free to enter and typically monk-accompanied; confirm the specific access arrangement with the monastery on arrival, as puja-week closures occur on dates that cannot be verified in advance — the monastery contact is +91-01906-223367. No restricted-area permit is required at the Sumdo checkpoint on standard Spiti itineraries that do not continue to Shipkila.
