Before you go
- Thin travel history significantly raises Schengen rejection risk — submit strong bank statements and a full day-by-day itinerary; there is no VoA or e-visa alternative for Indian passport holders, so a rejection means no travel at all.
- VFS Global processes Slovenian visas from seven-plus Indian cities; honorary consulates in Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai cannot accept applications, so arriving at the wrong counter wastes the appointment window entirely.
- The e-vignette for Slovenian motorways is compulsory the moment you enter any highway — rental companies rarely remind you, ANPR cameras enforce automatically at motorway entries, and the fine runs €300–€800.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — No direct flight from India. Best routing: DEL/BOM → Vienna (Austrian Airlines, ~9h) + 25 min train to Ljubljana; or DEL → Istanbul (Turkish, ~6h) + Istanbul → Ljubljana (~2.5h); total door-to-door 13–16h. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) is 25 km / 25 min from city centre.
By rail — No practical rail from India. Within Europe: Ljubljana → Venice 3.5h (Intercity); Ljubljana → Vienna 6h (OBB Nightjet overnight option); Ljubljana → Zagreb 2.5h. Eurail pass valid.
By road — Drive in from Vienna (380 km, 4h via A2), Venice (250 km, 2.5h), or Zagreb (140 km, 1.5h). Slovenia motorways require an e-vignette (€7.50/week or €30/year) — buy online before entry at evinjeta.dars.si or risk a €300 fine.

Permits & entry — Indian passport holders require a Schengen C tourist visa; Slovenia is a full Schengen member. VFS Global accepts Slovenian visa applications in at least seven Indian cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Hyderabad among them — making another member-state embassy unnecessary; the Slovenian Embassy in New Delhi (Block C-36, Anand Niketan) also takes direct appointments by email at consular.newdelhi@gov.si, though honorary consulates in Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai cannot process visa applications. Biometrics are mandatory at VFS submission; apply 4–6 weeks out for normal travel and 6–8 weeks in peak summer, as processing can stretch to 45 days. No inner-line or restricted-area permits are required anywhere in Slovenia; Triglav National Park is freely accessible with no general entry fee, though the Fratarica and Predelica canyon gorges each charge a small per-group infrastructure fee. Vršič Pass (Route 206, Slovenia's highest road) closes roughly November through late April/May — exact reopening depends on snowfall each year — and from 15 June 2026 operates under a managed traffic regime: private car parking at the summit is banned and a free public bus runs Kranjska Gora–Vršič–Bovec from 1 June to 30 September 2026; use promet.si (not dars.si, which covers motorways only) for live mountain road status. Pre-book Postojna Cave tickets online to skip up to 45-minute queues in peak season.
