Shravanabelagola's Gommateshwara — a 10th-century naked colossus rising serene above the Deccan scrubland — delivers one of India's most visceral grand-arrival moments. The twin-hill layout, 1,500-year-old Kannada inscriptions, and 30-odd Jain bastis make it simultaneously a pilgrimage site and an open-air sculpture museum with no crowds outside peak season.

Before you go
- The climb involves approximately 614–617 steep, uneven granite steps (some traveller accounts cite 650–700+); upper sections have no handrails — flag this clearly to clients with mobility limitations before booking.
- Doli (palanquin) hire is spot-booking only at the Trust's Tourist Reception and Information office at the foot of Vindyagiri Hill, during two daily windows (6:30–11:30 am and 3:30–6:30 pm); advance booking is not possible, units are limited, and waits are common; current round-trip rate is approximately ₹900 (confirmed May 2024).
- Granite steps reach extreme surface temperatures from April through June; advise clients to complete the ascent before 7:30 am and warn explicitly that cotton wraps placed on the steps will scorch.

By air — Mysore Airport (90 km, ~2 hrs road) or Bangalore Kempegowda International (165 km, ~3.5 hrs road); no airport at Hassan — road transfer is the final leg either way
By rail — Hassan railway station (28 km, ~45 min road); Yeshvantpur–Hassan Express from Bangalore SBC takes ~3.5 hrs; Channarayapatna station (12 km) on the same line for slower passenger trains
By road — Bangalore 158 km via NH48 + SH17, ~3.5 hrs by car or cab; Mysore 84 km via SH17, ~2 hrs; Hassan 28 km, ~40 min; KSRTC buses from Bangalore Kempegowda Bus Station every 1–2 hrs, ~4.5 hrs

Permits & entry — No inner-line or restricted-area permit is required for Indian travellers. Entry to Vindyagiri Hill and the wider Shravanabelagola complex is free; the only likely on-site charge is a small footwear-deposit fee at the counter. Leather articles — belts, leather-soled footwear, and leather handbags — are prohibited inside the complex perimeter on both hills and must be left in the vehicle or surrendered at the gate before entry. Photography inside the inner sanctum and during active abhisheka ceremonies is restricted; long-lens or tripod use is commonly said to require prior written permission from the Shravanabelagola Trust, though the exact permission process is unconfirmed — verify with the trust office on arrival before quoting clients a clear procedure. The next Mahamastakabhisheka (grand anointing) is confirmed for 2030; the event draws approximately 3–4 million visitors over nine days, site access is managed through trust-issued timed passes, and accommodation must be booked at least 12 months in advance.
