- Shimla airport cancellations are routine — always route clients via Chandigarh or the Kalka–Shimla UNESCO narrow-gauge toy train (96 km, 5+ hours; sell it as the experience, not the transfer).
- May peak season brings genuine gridlock on Mall Road, months-ahead hotel bookings, and doubled rates — set client expectations firmly at the time of booking.
- NH-5 landslides during monsoon (July–August) can strand travellers for 12–48 hours; travel insurance with delay cover is essential.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Shimla (SLV, Jubbarhatti) has ATR services from Delhi (~1 hr) but 40-50% cancellation rate due to crosswinds; most visitors fly into Chandigarh (CHD, 1 hr from Delhi), then 90 km road (2.5 hrs) to Shimla
By rail — Kalka-Shimla Narrow Gauge (UNESCO World Heritage) — 96 km, ~5 hrs, spectacular; reach Kalka by overnight Kalka Mail or Shatabdi from Delhi (~5-6 hrs from New Delhi station)
By road — Delhi to Shimla ~350 km via NH44 + NH5, 7-9 hrs by car (leave before 0600 to avoid Chandigarh traffic); Chandigarh to Shimla 90 km, 2.5-3 hrs; Volvo buses from Delhi ISBT Kashmiri Gate, overnight (~10 hrs)

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no permits for Shimla town or the standard day-trip circuit (Kufri, Chail, Narkanda, Tattapani). Kinnaur — including Sangla, Chitkul, and the Reckong Peo–Sumdo / Hangrang Valley stretch near the China border — is also open to Indian nationals without any permit; travellers simply register with a valid government photo ID at army/police checkposts at Jangi and Sumdo. The Inner Line Permit issued by DC Kinnaur applies to foreign nationals only. For Rohtang Pass when combining with Manali, an NGT e-permit is mandatory via rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in; the fee is ₹550 per tourist vehicle (₹500 permit + ₹50 congestion), uniform across all vehicle registration states; a daily vehicular quota applies, the pass closes every Tuesday with no tourist permits issued, and diesel/petrol vehicles over 10 years old are barred. At the Viceregal Lodge (IIAS), Indian nationals pay ₹20 entry; an optional guided tour costs ₹100 per person; photography is strictly prohibited inside the building with no fee option to override this. Remove footwear at Jakhu and Sankat Mochan temples; no formal dress code otherwise applies.
