One of the world's largest annual pilgrimages, Sabarimala funnels tens of millions of devotees to a forested hilltop shrine where 41 days of strict ritual vrat, a pre-dawn river bath at Pamba, and the pyrotechnic Makaravilakku star-flame ceremony combine into a spectacle of raw collective devotion no other Indian pilgrimage quite matches. - VQ portal slots for Mandalam and Makaravilakku release approximately 10–15 days before the intended darshan date, not 30–60 days as widely circulated; the 2025 Mandalam season (opening 16 November) went live on 1 November and popular dates sold out within hours — watch sabarimalaonline.org and have clients ready to book the instant the portal opens.
- Women aged 10–50 face de facto entry refusal at the shrine; the 2018 Supreme Court ruling is not being enforced on the ground, and a 9-judge Constitution Bench re-hearing was still ongoing as of April 2026 with no reversal of the restriction — brief affected clients explicitly and reconfirm current state policy before travel.

By air — Cochin International (COK) 170 km, ~4-4.5 hrs by road via Kottayam and Erumeli — preferred hub; Trivandrum (TRV) 175 km, ~4.5 hrs via Pathanamthitta
By rail — Chengannur (CNGR) on the Ernakulam–Thiruvananthapuram mainline, 72 km from Pamba (~2 hrs by road); Kottayam station 90 km (~2.5 hrs); both have regular trains from Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi
By road — NH 183 from Kochi via Kottayam → Erumeli → Nilackal → Pamba (170 km, 4-5 hrs); KSRTC and private buses run Kottayam–Pamba year-round; extra frequency during Mandalam; private taxis ~₹3,500-4,500 one way from Kochi

Permits & entry — No inner-line permit or protected-area permit is required for Indian nationals; Kerala is not an ILP state and Sabarimala falls outside any restricted zone under the Foreigners Protected Areas Order. All visitors must pre-book a VQ (Virtual Queue) darshan slot at sabarimalaonline.org; during Mandalam and Makaravilakku peak seasons, slots release approximately 10–15 days before the intended darshan date — for the 2025 Mandalam season opening 16 November, booking went live 1 November and December slots opened 24 November — so monitor the portal and have clients ready to book the moment slots appear, as popular dates sell out within hours of release. Pilgrims observing a 41-day vrat must wear maala (rudraksha or tulsi beads) and carry irumudi kettu; both are verified at checkpoints before entry is permitted. Entry for women aged 10–50 remains de facto restricted at the shrine despite the 2018 Supreme Court ruling; a 9-judge Constitution Bench re-hearing was ongoing as of April 2026 with no final ruling reversing the ground-level ban — reconfirm current state practice before booking female clients in that age range. The temple opens for Mandalam (Mandalapooja Mahotsavam) on Vrishchikam 1 of the Malayalam calendar, a date that falls approximately 14–17 November in the Gregorian calendar (16 November in 2025), and closes around 27 December on Mandalapooja day; Makaravilakku Mahotsavam is a multi-week season running approximately 30 December to 20 January, with 14 January being specifically Makaravilakku Day when the Makarajyoti celestial event occurs.
