Before you go
- Rishikesh is officially a dry city — no alcohol is sold or served anywhere within municipal limits; brief clients before arrival.
- Rafting is banned from approximately mid-June to late September; the monsoon lifting consistently falls in the final week of September (2025 reopening: 27 September), and a prolonged monsoon can push closure into early October — always confirm with your operator 48 hours before departure, as unseasonal rain can also suspend operations in May and October.
- The International Yoga Festival runs the second week of March (consistently 9–15 March at Parmarth Niketan), followed immediately by the Uttarakhand Government Yoga Festival (16–22 March); Navratri in October also fills Tapovan — book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead for any of these windows or expect doubled prices and sold-out quality camps.

By rail — Haridwar Junction (HW) is the main railhead, 25 km (~40 min taxi ₹500); New Delhi–Haridwar Shatabdi 4.5 hrs; Rishikesh Railway Station handles slower, limited services only
By road — Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate to Rishikesh ~250 km via NH 334; Volvo AC buses ₹500–700, 5–6 hrs; Haridwar to Rishikesh 25 km shared jeep ₹30 or taxi ₹400

Permits & entry — No inner-line or restricted-area permit is required for Indian nationals visiting Rishikesh town. Entry to Beatles Ashram — inside the Rajaji Tiger Reserve buffer, upgraded from National Park status in 2015 — costs ₹150 for Indian nationals and approximately ₹1,200 for foreign nationals; the ₹600 foreigner rate circulating online is outdated. Rajaji National Park jeep safari requires advance booking; Indian visitor fees are ₹150 per-person entry plus ₹250 vehicle entry plus a separate mandatory naturalist-guide fee of ₹600, with total all-in cost for an Indian group typically running ₹3,000–₹4,500. Neelkanth Mahadev Temple charges no entry fee, but weekend and Kanwar/Shravan-season traffic on the single-lane approach road is severe; no formal controlled-access restriction exists, congestion is managed by queue, and arriving before 9 am is strongly advised. Commercial rafting operators must be registered with the UTDB (Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board); rafting is officially banned from approximately mid-June to late September, with the river consistently reopening in the final week of September (2024: 24 September; 2025: 27 September) — exact dates are set annually by the district magistrate based on Ganga water levels; reconfirm the current season's reopening date before quoting.
