Before you go
- Temple dress code is absolute: men must remove their shirt and wear a dhoti to enter the inner sanctum, and clients in shorts, jeans, or shirts will be turned away at the outer gate — brief them firmly before departure and confirm they carry a dhoti or plan to rent one from stalls outside.
- Police clear all visitors from Arichal Munai by approximately 5:00–5:30 PM and no sunset viewing is permitted; plan to depart Dhanushkodi no later than 4:30 PM to avoid being rushed out along the tidal track.
- The Dhanushkodi access road is a tidal sand track that floods without warning — jeep drivers cancel without notice during high swells or Bay of Bengal cyclone alerts (October–December is the most vulnerable window; Cyclone Ditwah in November 2025 confirmed the regional risk), and no alternative transport exists once the track is flooded.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Nearest airport: Madurai (IXM), served from Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi — then 160 km / 3.5 hrs by cab or SETC bus to Rameswaram. Tuticorin (TCR) is 160 km south but fewer connections.
By rail — Direct trains: Sethu Express from Chennai Egmore (~15 hrs overnight), Jan Shatabdi from Chennai (~13 hrs), trains from Madurai (~2.5 hrs) and Coimbatore (~8 hrs). Rameswaram station sits on the island — the train crosses Pamban Bridge, which is itself a highlight.
By road — From Madurai: 160 km, NH87, 3–3.5 hrs by cab (₹2,500–3,500 one-way). From Chennai: 580 km, 10–11 hrs. SETC buses from Madurai run frequently (₹120–180). Private cabs recommended for Dhanushkodi once on island (₹1,800–2,500 round trip by shared jeep, ₹700–900 pp shared).

Permits & entry — No permits are required for Indian nationals visiting Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi, or Adam's Bridge viewpoints. Ramanathaswamy Temple enforces a strict dress code: men must wear dhoti/veshti with shirt removed (angavastram optional) to enter the main sanctum; women must wear saree or salwar kameez; shorts, jeans, and western clothing bar entry at the outer gate. Photography, videography, and mobile phones are banned across the entire temple premises; phones must be deposited at the cloak room before the outer gate (fee approximately ₹5–10 per device; the Madras HC-mandated rate was ₹5 — reconfirm the exact current counter rate before quoting). Dhanushkodi requires no government entry permit; visitors travel by shared jeep from the ruins checkpoint to Arichal Munai at approximately ₹150–200 per person one way (₹300–400 return), which is a transport charge, not an entry fee; a separate vehicle levy of approximately ₹50 per vehicle may apply at the restricted zone. Police clear all visitors from Arichal Munai before dark, with a hard cutoff of approximately 5:00–5:30 PM; no sunset viewing is permitted. Viewing Adam's Bridge shoals from the Dhanushkodi shore is free; physically accessing or walking onto the shoals is prohibited.
