India's only Brahma temple, a sacred rose-rimmed lake, and the world's most theatrical camel fair — Pushkar packs a lifetime of colour into three square kilometres of holy desert town.
Pushkar is one of Hinduism's five sacred dhams — a miraculously blue lake ringed by 52 bathing ghats and watched over by the world's only major Brahma temple. Each November its surrounding dunes erupt into the Camel Fair, drawing 200,000 traders, pilgrims, and acrobats in the most photographed spectacle in Rajasthan.

Before you go
- Pushkar is legally dry — public consumption of alcohol is illegal and carries real risk; some upscale hotels and a few mid-range properties serve it discreetly off-menu or allow in-room consumption, but clients must not assume availability and should never drink in any public space.
- Ghat priests aggressively push the 'Pushkar passport' puja: Indian visitors are typically asked for Rs 21–100, but any hesitant visitor can be escalated, and foreign-looking or foreign-passport clients are routinely targeted for Rs 2,000–5,000 — brief clients to name a small fixed amount (Rs 100–200 is the ceiling for Indians) before engagement begins, or walk away immediately without negotiating.
- The Camel Fair (November, timed to Kartik Purnima) causes 3–5x accommodation price spikes; luxury tents and heritage properties sell out 8–10 months in advance — advise clients to book the moment a November trip is confirmed.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is the closest major airport, 145 km / ~2.5 hrs by road; Jodhpur Airport (JDH) is 190 km / ~3 hrs. No direct flights to Pushkar.
By rail — Ajmer Junction (14 km from Pushkar, 30 min by road) is the railhead — well-connected to Delhi (Ajmer Shatabdi, ~5.5 hrs), Jaipur (1.5 hrs), Mumbai, Ahmedabad. Pre-book taxis at the station.
By road — From Jaipur: 145 km via NH48/NH58, ~2.5 hrs by cab (Rs 2,500-3,500). From Delhi: ~400 km via Jaipur, 6-7 hrs. Private cabs easiest; no direct bus from Delhi. Ajmer-Pushkar local autos Rs 200-300.

Permits & entry — Indian citizens require no permit of any kind to visit Pushkar — Ajmer district is neither a Protected Area nor an Inner Line Permit zone, and Rajasthan levies no ILP or PAP on Indian nationals; no seasonal road closures or zone-entry restrictions apply. Foreign nationals require a standard Indian tourist visa; no Protected Area Permit is needed for Pushkar specifically. Non-Hindus may not enter the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) of Brahma Temple but are welcome in the outer hall and compound; leather items (shoes, belts, wallets) must be deposited at the temple gate, where shoe-keeping stalls operate. Brahma Temple closes at 1:30 pm for the midday break and reopens at 3:00 pm; smaller shrines vary and not all observe a midday closure. The 'Pushkar passport' puja at the ghats is legally optional; if clients are approached, they should agree a fixed amount upfront (Rs 100–200 is adequate for Indian visitors; foreign tourists are routinely pressed for Rs 2,000–5,000).
