Before you go
- The real cyclone risk window runs October through December, with November–December the most dangerous period for Puducherry specifically; Cyclone Fengal made direct landfall on 30 November 2024, dropping 484 mm in a single event (the highest in 30 years), killing at least 30 people, submerging vehicles citywide, and triggering multi-day school and office closures — travel insurance with weather and natural-disaster cancellation cover is non-negotiable for any booking in this window.
- The Matrimandir inner chamber requires advance online booking at mmaccess.auroville.org.in (minimum 3–5 days ahead, ideally a full week); the portal is closed on Sundays and Tuesdays, same-day booking is impossible, and capacity is very limited — many visitors leave without a slot, so plan a minimum two-night stay.
- Weekend traffic from Chennai and Bangalore (Friday–Sunday) fills White Town cafés and the promenade; boutique hotels frequently sell out by Thursday noon — book 4–6 weeks ahead for December–January travel.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Puducherry Airport (PNY) has limited IndiGo/Alliance Air flights from Chennai and Bangalore — check schedule as it changes seasonally; Chennai airport (MAA) is the reliable hub, then ~3–3.5 hrs by road (160 km via ECR/NH32)
By rail — Chennai Egmore to Puducherry via Pondicherry Express (16115) — ~4 hrs; or Shatabdi to Villupuram (~3 hrs) then 40-min connecting train or taxi
By road — Chennai to Puducherry ~160 km via ECR (scenic coastal route) or NH32 — 3–3.5 hrs by cab; Bangalore to Puducherry ~310 km via NH44 — 5–6 hrs depending on Hosur traffic

Permits & entry — No permit is required for Indian nationals; Puducherry is a Union Territory with no inner-line, restricted-area, or protected-area designation. Foreign nationals enter on a standard Indian e-visa — no additional permit is required. The Matrimandir amphitheatre viewpoint is walk-in only: collect a free same-day pass at the Auroville Visitors Centre (open daily 9 am–5 pm) after a short introductory video; no advance registration is needed or possible for the viewpoint. Meditation access to the inner chamber requires advance online booking at mmaccess.auroville.org.in, submitted at least 3–5 days ahead (a full week is strongly recommended); the chamber is closed to visitors on Sundays and Tuesdays, same-day booking is not available, and a minimum two-night stay is a practical necessity for any realistic chance of a slot. Sri Aurobindo Ashram is open to all visitors; strict silence is maintained throughout, and photography is prohibited, particularly near the Samadhi and inner courtyard.
