Hampi's boulder-strewn riverscape holds the most atmospheric ruins in India — the 14th-century Vijayanagara capital, abandoned in a week after defeat and left largely intact for 500 years. Pair it with Pattadakal's UNESCO Chalukya complex 140 km south to trace the full arc of Deccani temple architecture, from early experiments at Aihole to the Vijayanagara apex, in a single itinerary.

Before you go
- Musical pillars at Vittala Temple are permanently roped off and cannot be struck — guests expecting a live tapping demonstration will be disappointed; set this expectation before arrival.
- Hosapete is the only base with reliable ATMs, pharmacies, and hospitals; Hampi village is largely cash-dependent with no urgent medical facilities on site.
- Dec–Jan peak: Hampi village guesthouses book out months in advance and Hosapete hotels fill from October — confirm accommodation before selling the itinerary.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Hubli Airport (HBX) is the closest airport — 75 km / 1.5 hrs to Hosapete; served from Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad. Kempegowda International Bangalore (BLR) is the main gateway — 340 km / 6 hrs by road or overnight train.
By rail — Hosapete Junction (HPT) is 13 km from Hampi; Hampi Express (16591/92) runs overnight from Bangalore (KSR) in 8.5 hrs. From Hubli: 2 hrs. From Hyderabad: change at Guntakal, ~10 hrs total.
By road — From Bangalore: NH48 via Chitradurga then SH57, ~350 km / 6 hrs. From Goa (Panaji): via Hubli on NH67, ~350 km / 6.5 hrs. From Hyderabad: NH44 via Kurnool, ~370 km / 7 hrs. Local transport: auto-rickshaws and bicycles within Hampi; hire a car for the Badami–Aihole–Pattadakal circuit.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require no visa, inner-line permit, or protected-area clearance for Hampi or Pattadakal. The ASI composite ticket for the Hampi Group of Monuments costs approximately ₹30–40 per Indian adult (children under 15 free) and covers the Vittala Temple compound, Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, and all enclosed ASI sites for one full day; reconfirm the exact amount at the ASI portal before quoting, as fees change without notice. Pattadakal entry is approximately ₹40 for Indians; Aihole is approximately ₹35; no permit is required for either site. Photography at ASI archaeological monuments — including Vittala and Hazara Rama — is permitted: still cameras are free, video cameras attract a ₹25 fee, and tripods are not allowed. Photography is restricted only inside the main sanctum of active, functioning temples; at Virupaksha Temple, footwear must be removed at the outer gate, photography inside the main sanctum is restricted, and the Vastra Sanhita dress code enforced at the entrance prohibits shorts, sleeveless tops, jeans, Bermuda shorts, low-waist jeans, and short-length T-shirts. Monsoon-related closures begin in June: the Tungabhadra swells from June onward, the coracle crossing typically halts from June or early July through September, and specific riverside ruins become inaccessible at the site manager's discretion from June.
