Ooty
Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu · 2,240 m
Ride a UNESCO toy train through emerald tea slopes to a hill station where the air smells of eucalyptus and the nights actually call for a sweater — this is South India's best cold-weather escape.
Ooty pairs Victorian-era bungalows and manicured botanical gardens with working Nilgiri tea estates still harvested by hand — the rare hill station where the British legacy, tribal Toda culture, and a UNESCO mountain railway coexist in one compact plateau. Nights drop to single digits even in summer, making it the default cool-air refuge for peninsular India.

- Doddabetta Peak (2,637 m, highest in Nilgiris; telescope house)
- Nilgiri Mountain Railway — Mettupalayam to Ooty, 46 km UNESCO rack-and-pinion
- Ooty Lake (boating; colonial-era artificial reservoir)
To do
- Toy-train ride Mettupalayam–Coonoor–Ooty (full 5-hr ascent; reserve 1st class months ahead)

- Wildlife safari at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (connected via Gudalur; jeep + elephant zones)
- Trek Doddabetta summit trail or Elk Hill via forest department route
Before you go
- NMR (Nilgiri Mountain Railway) 1st-class tickets sell out within hours of the booking window opening; as of November 2024, IRCTC reduced its general advance window to 60 days and NMR runs a 30-day window for some quotas — book the moment the window opens at 8 AM on the opening day, and verify the current NMR-specific advance period on IRCTC before advising clients; peak sell-out dates are Apr–Jun, Oct–Nov, and Diwali week.
- Apr–May and school-holiday weekends (Oct–Nov) see hotel rates triple and the single main road into town gridlock for 2–4 hours — build buffer days or base clients in Coonoor.
- Mettupalayam and Gudalur Ghats close intermittently May–September due to landslides; closures are unpredictable, can last hours to several days with little notice — include an explicit weather and road-closure disclaimer for these months and advise clients to check conditions within 48 hours of departure.

Permits & entry — No inner-line or restricted-area permit is required for Indian nationals visiting Ooty. Mudumalai Tiger Reserve charges ~₹340–350 per person for van safaris (Indians); book online at mudumalaitigerreserve.com or at the Theppakadu Forest Department counter — online slots fill fast. Jeep/gypsy safaris are priced per vehicle at ~₹4,000–4,200 per trip (6 seats), with a separate entry fee of ~₹50 per person; this is not a per-person safari charge. Upper Bhavani and Mukurthi plateau access requires prior permission from the Nilgiri Forest Division, Ooty — apply at least 1–2 weeks in advance by phone or in person, as only trekking and camping are permitted (reconfirm lead time with the Division before quoting). Ooty Lake boating is regulated by TTDC; no separate permit is needed. The Mettupalayam Ghat and Gudalur–Ooty roads are susceptible to landslide closures May–September; closures are unpredictable and can last hours to several days (NMR train service was suspended for multiple days in May 2024) — check TNRD road notices and local Nilgiris news 24–48 hours before any ghat-road travel.
