Nongriat sits in a sacred Khasi gorge where rubber-fig trees were guided across the Umshiang river over centuries into the iconic Double Decker Living Root Bridge — still growing, still functional. The reward for the hard descent is a phone-signal-free world of emerald pools, roaring waterfalls, and genuine village-homestay hospitality untouched by resort culture.

Before you go
- The trek descends and climbs back approximately 3,500 steps in roughly 6–8 hours round trip — rule out guests with knee problems, cardiac conditions, or poor fitness before confirming.
- June–September brings landslides, leech infestations, and periodic unofficial trail closures; do not book these months without current local confirmation.
- There is zero mobile signal inside the gorge and no ATMs in Nongriat or Tyrna; guests must withdraw cash in Shillong (Cherrapunji ATMs are limited and frequently unreliable) and budget at least Rs 3,000 per person for trail fees, homestay, meals, and contingencies.

- Day 1: Arrive Cherrapunji; check in; visit Nohsngithiang Seven Sisters Falls viewpoint and Mawsmai Cave on the plateau.

- Day 3: Single bridge at dawn; ascend back to Tyrna (2.5 hrs); transfer out.

- Day 3: Drive to Tyrna; descend 3,500 steps (2 hrs); Double Decker Root Bridge and swimming hole; overnight Nongriat homestay.
- Day 4: Dawn trek to Rainbow Falls (1 hr each way); return to Nongriat; midday ascent back to Tyrna (2.5 hrs); evening Cherrapunji.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Fly to Guwahati (GAU) — nearest airport; ~3.5-hr drive to Shillong, then 1.5 hrs to Cherrapunji, then 30 min to Tyrna trailhead (~6 hrs airport to trailhead total). No airport in Cherrapunji.
By rail — Guwahati Junction is the nearest railhead (connected to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai). Same road onward as above — 5.5–6 hrs by road to Cherrapunji.
By road — Shillong to Cherrapunji: 55 km, ~1.5 hrs on NH6. Cherrapunji to Tyrna: 8 km, 30 min. Tyrna to Nongriat: 2-hr foot descent (no motorable road). Shared taxis Shillong–Cherrapunji run through the day (Rs 100–150 pp).

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require no Inner Line Permit or restricted-area permit for East Khasi Hills or Nongriat; a government-issued photo ID is sufficient. A conservation/entry fee of approximately Rs 20–50 per person is collected at Tyrna, with most 2025 accounts citing Rs 20–30 as the norm. The trail is subject to informal closure during monsoon season, June–September, and may shut without notice. Since approximately January 2021, Nongriat village has enforced a Sunday day-tripper closure — the community reserves Sundays for rest and cleaning; overnight guests are generally exempt, but Sunday day-trip access must be confirmed with a local guide or homestay before booking any Sunday visit.
