Before you go
- The road from Thal is single-lane with sheer drops throughout; shared jeeps are the norm and self-driving without hill experience is genuinely risky.
- Milam Glacier access changed in October 2023 when ITBP removed the mandatory ILP for Indian nationals; if any check-post registration is still expected on the route, it is obtained at SDM Munsiyari in town (same-day, ~₹100) — not at DM Pithoragarh with a 1–2 day wait — and current status should be confirmed at SDM Munsiyari before departure, as border rules can quietly revert.
- Foreign nationals heading to Johar Valley need a PAP (Protected Area Permit) or RAP under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order 1958, applied via the MHA e-FRRO portal or an Indian embassy — the process takes several weeks minimum and the document is entirely separate from the ILP, which applies only to Indian citizens.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Naini Saini Airport, Pithoragarh (73 km, ~3 hrs drive) — limited IndiGo/Alliance Air service from Delhi; most reliable entry is Pantnagar (253 km, ~7–8 hrs drive) with daily Delhi flights
By rail — Kathgodam Railway Station (290 km, ~8–9 hrs drive) — well-connected overnight trains from Delhi (Ranikhet/Kathgodam Express); then taxi or shared jeep via Almora–Pithoragarh
By road — Delhi → Munsiyari ~500 km, 13–15 hrs via NH9 to Haldwani → Almora → Pithoragarh → Thal → Munsiyari; KMOU buses run Haldwani–Pithoragarh; shared jeeps Pithoragarh → Munsiyari (~3 hrs, ₹250 pp)

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no permit for Munsiyari town or Khaliya Top. For Milam Glacier, ITBP removed the mandatory inner-line permit (ILP) for Indian tourists in October 2023; however, some 2025 trek guides still reference an ITBP check-post registration letter — if one is required, it is issued by the SDM office in Munsiyari town (same-day processing, ID and full group roster, fee approximately ₹100), not by DM Pithoragarh. Reconfirm the current requirement at SDM Munsiyari before the trek, as border-area rules can revert without public notice. Foreign nationals do not use an ILP; they require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order 1958, applied through the MHA e-FRRO portal or an Indian mission abroad — allow several weeks minimum, not days. The Thal–Munsiyari road closes in two distinct windows: Kalamuni Pass snowfall (December–February, BRO typically clears within hours to 2–3 days) and monsoon landslides (July–September, more frequent and potentially multi-day). Check BRO/SDRF or local police road status before travel in either window. No dress-code restrictions apply at Maheshwari Kund or Nanda Devi temple beyond removing footwear.
