Before you go
- The road from Along to Mechuka is a single-lane mud track; one landslide between June and September can strand a group for 3–7 days with no alternate route.
- There are no ATMs in Mechuka — withdraw all cash in Aalo (SBI ATM) or Guwahati before entering, as Aalo ATMs also run dry during peak season, making Guwahati the safer backstop.
- The Pawan Hans helicopter is cancelled without notice for cloud cover and is periodically suspended; never present it as a confirmed return option.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Pasighat (IXV) is the nearest commercial airport; IndiGo/Air India from Kolkata or Guwahati. Pawan Hans runs a helicopter Pasighat→Mechuka (~30 min, ₹3,500 one-way) but is weather-dependent and frequently cancelled — treat as a bonus, not a plan.
By rail — Murkongselek (Assam) is the railhead (~350 km, 10–11 hr drive to Mechuka via Along); Dibrugarh is the better-served junction and also ~350 km / 10 hr.
By road — Along (Aalo) to Mechuka: 150 km on mountain track, 5–6 hr by 4WD. Itanagar to Along: ~420 km, 10–11 hr. Full Guwahati–Mechuka overland: ~650 km, 16–18 hr — break at Along.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for all of Arunachal Pradesh; apply online at eilp.arunachal.gov.in (also accessible at arunachalilp.com). The eILP fee is ₹300 for stays up to 3 days and ₹500 for stays beyond 3 days up to 14 days — any Mechuka itinerary exceeds 3 days, so budget ₹500 per person. Online processing takes 1–3 working days; offline counters at Arunachal Bhavan offices in Guwahati, Kolkata, and New Delhi can issue same-day or next-day. The ILP must explicitly name "Shi-Yomi" as the district — Mechuka was moved from West Siang into the newly created Shi-Yomi district in 2018, and permits listing only "West Siang" can be challenged at checkpoints. For villages beyond the Mechuka core toward the LAC, an additional Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required from the Deputy Commissioner's office of Shi-Yomi district at Tato (not Aalo/Along, which is the West Siang district HQ); allow 2–3 working days, carry passport-size photos, and note that RAP approval is not guaranteed. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi, must travel in a minimum group of two, and must use a registered tour operator; roads on the Tato section to Mechuka may close without notice June–September — reconfirm status with DC Shi-Yomi or your Aalo-based operator before departure.
