Before you go
- The monsoon window is late June through September: the southwest monsoon reaches Kangra by late June triggering immediate landslides (the Dharamshala–Kangra NH was blocked on onset day in June 2025), and the Pathankot–Mandi highway (NH154/NH503) suffered a 2–3 day full closure in August 2025; Gaggal flights cancel in low cloud throughout this window, so build a 1-day buffer at each end and check HP road-clearance status on the day of travel.
- Gaggal (Kangra) Airport handles roughly 100 passengers per slot (50 arrivals, 50 departures), books out weeks ahead in peak months, and a single cancellation leaves passengers stranded with no same-day alternative; the reliable fallback is train to Pathankot Junction then a ~3.5 hr taxi.
- McLeodganj's single access road backs up 1–2 hours on Indian long weekends and public holidays; plan sightseeing on foot or schedule very early departures on those days.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Gaggal Airport (DHM) 15 km from Dharamshala; IndiGo/Air India from Delhi ~1 hr, Chandigarh seasonal. Tiny airport with 2-3 slots daily — books out 6 weeks ahead in May/Oct; weather cancellations common; always have a bus backup plan.
By rail — No broad-gauge rail. Pathankot (90 km, 2.5 hrs road) is the nearest main-line station; overnight trains from Delhi (Pathankot Express, ~8 hrs). Kangra Valley Narrow Gauge toy train from Pathankot to Kangra adds 2 hrs but is scenic.
By road — 480 km from Delhi ~10-12 hrs; HRTC Volvo overnight buses from ISBT Kashmiri Gate (Rs 900-1,400). Chandigarh ~5 hrs; Amritsar ~4 hrs via Pathankot. Shared taxis from Pathankot Rs 300 pp, private taxi Rs 1,800-2,200.

Permits & entry — Indian and foreign nationals require no inner-line or protected-area permit for McLeodganj or Dharamshala; Kangra district is not a restricted zone, the protected-area permit (PAP) applies only to upper Kinnaur and Spiti, and foreign visitors need only a standard tourist visa. The Triund trek requires payment of approximately ₹200 per person at the Gallu Devi/Gallu checkpost (HP Forest Department); the fee was briefly ₹100/day in 2024 and reverted to ₹200 for 2025–26 — confirm the exact current amount locally before departure. Overnight camping at Triund costs an additional ₹550 per tent; carry a government-issued photo ID, as bypassing the checkpost carries a ₹5,000 on-the-spot fine. Rohtang Pass is accessed from Manali (~51 km from the pass), which is ~223 km and a 5–6 hr drive from Dharamshala via Mandi; if an itinerary links both destinations, the eco-permit must be booked at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in (not himachaltourism.gov.in). The daily Rohtang quota is 1,200 vehicles (800 petrol, 400 diesel), released at 10 AM for the following day; it sells out within 2–5 minutes during the May–June peak, the pass closes every Tuesday, and bookings typically need to be secured 2–3 days in advance. All monastery visits require shoes removed and shoulders and knees covered; staff turn away visitors who do not comply.
