Mawlynnong

East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya · ~950 m

Asia's cleanest village sits 3 km from Bangladesh — bamboo-lined paths, living root bridges and a river so clear the boats appear to float in glass.

Mawlynnong (pop. ~500) has held the Asia's Cleanest Village title since 2003 and earns it — communal bamboo dustbins, swept paths and flower gardens set a standard no other Indian village matches. A 20-minute drive drops you at the Umngot River, one of Asia's clearest, where coracle boats appear suspended in mid-air above the visible riverbed.

What you'll see & do

The sights worth the trip, and how to spend the days around them.

To see

  • Mawlynnong Village bamboo dustbin trail and community gardens
  • Sky Walk 30 m bamboo observation tower (Bangladesh plains view)
  • Living Root Bridge at Riwai Village (1.5 km walk from Mawlynnong)
  • Balancing Rock — natural granite monolith at village entrance

To do

  • Self-guided village walk along bamboo-paved paths and garden trail
  • Climb the Sky Walk bamboo tree-house tower for Bangladesh plains panorama
  • Trek to Riwai living root bridge (easy, 30 min round trip)
  • Coracle or motorboat ride on the Umngot River at Dawki

Before you go

  • Only 10–12 homestay units exist in the village, booking out weeks in advance October–January, with no nearby luxury fallback if rooms are full.
  • Weekend day-trippers from Shillong flood the village Saturday–Sunday; mid-week stays are the only way to preserve a quiet-village experience.
  • The Umngot River clear-water boat ride is at Dawki, 10–12 km from Mawlynnong: monsoon (June–September) turns it brown and opaque, and NHIDCL construction debris now causes turbidity outside monsoon too, making clear conditions unreliable year-round.

Getting there, permits & day trips

By air — Fly Guwahati (GAU) — best connectivity from all metros — then 5–5.5 hr road transfer; Umroi/Shillong (SHL) has limited flights, saves 2 hr on road

By rail — Guwahati Junction is nearest major railhead; 5 hr drive to Mawlynnong — no usable closer station

By road — Shillong → Mawlynnong via Pynursla ~90 km / 2.5–3 hr; Guwahati → Mawlynnong ~185 km / 5–5.5 hr

On a Driftibo trip we handle the transfers.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no Inner Line Permit, Protected Area Permit, or Restricted Area Permit for Meghalaya or Mawlynnong; carry a government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar or voter card) for border-area checkposts. The village charges a gate entry fee of approximately ₹50–100 per person; the separate Sky View Tower/observation-deck charge is ₹20 — verify the current gate rate on arrival as fees have increased. Foreign nationals require no RAP or PAP for general Meghalaya tourist circuits but must carry a passport for routine, free registration at the Dawki border-area checkpoint. The sole practical route from Shillong is the NH206 Shillong–Dawki highway via Pynursla — not the Cherrapunji road, which runs in the opposite direction. NH206 is under active NHIDCL widening works and recorded a full closure in April 2026 and daily time-window restrictions in August 2025, in addition to its usual landslide risk June–September; reconfirm road status before every departure.
