Before you go
- Non-Hindus are barred from the garbhagriha and main shrine precincts; they may enter the outer compound (gopurams, pillared corridors, Golden Lotus Tank) but pay ₹50 at the gate and are stopped by staff at inner-entrance checkpoints before the main deities.
- All photography, videography, and mobile phones are banned inside the entire complex (Madras HC-backed enforcement); clients must deposit every device at entrance counters for ₹10 per token and should print e-tickets and darshan QR codes before arrival, as in-temple navigation is not possible.
- The temple closes completely from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM daily — clients arriving between noon and 4 PM cannot access the inner complex; every Madurai itinerary must fit the 5:00 AM–12:00 PM or 4:00 PM–10:00 PM windows.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no inner-line or protected-area permit to visit Madurai; Tamil Nadu is not subject to any ILP regime, and foreign nationals require only a standard Indian tourist visa. Non-Hindus may not enter the garbhagriha (inner sanctum) or main shrine precincts but may access the outer corridors, gopurams, and the Golden Lotus Tank area for a ₹50 entry fee collected at the gate; temple staff enforce the boundary at inner-entrance checkpoints. Men must remove shirts before the inner sanctum; all leather items (belts, bags, wallets) must be deposited at the cloak-room before entry. Photography, videography, and mobile phones are banned throughout the entire complex under a Madras High Court order; all devices must be deposited at entrance counters for ₹10 per device per 4-hour token — no DSLR or camera permit is available to general visitors. Commercial or press photography requires a separate licence from the temple's Executive Officer and is not available to tourists. On the Rameswaram route, the old bascule bridge was replaced by the new Pamban Bridge (inaugurated 6 April 2025, rated for 230 kmph winds); rail and road operations can still be suspended during severe cyclonic events — reconfirm status before quoting travel during the October–December peak cyclone window.
