Laos is the unhurried, deeply Buddhist face of Indochina - Luang Prabang's lantern-lit streets and saffron alms processions at dawn feel centuries removed from Bangkok's chaos. Karst valleys, the Kuang Si falls and a riverside culture that refuses to be hurried make it the favourite Southeast Asia discovery for Indian travellers who have already done Thailand and Vietnam.

Before you go
- No direct India–Laos flight exists; all routings require a Bangkok, Hanoi, or Kuala Lumpur layover adding 3–5 hours and sometimes an overnight — factor this into total travel time and visa-issue timing (a direct bilateral service has been announced but was not operational as of mid-2026; reconfirm before quoting).
- On the Vietnam–Laos overland route, only the Dansavan/Lao Bảo crossing (Savannakhet side) reliably issues VOA; all other Vietnam-side crossings neither issue VOA nor accept the e-Visa — clients crossing from Vietnam must obtain a Lao sticker visa at the Lao consulate in Hanoi or Danang before reaching the border.
- ATMs outside Vientiane and Luang Prabang are rare and frequently empty; clients should carry USD 200–300 in small bills (USD 1 and USD 5), as both Lao kip and USD are accepted but change is scarce.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — No direct India-Laos flight exists. Connect via Bangkok (BKK/DMK) - Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Lao Airlines - or via Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia). Delhi/Mumbai to Vientiane (VTE) or Luang Prabang (LPQ) totals 6-10 hrs including 1-2 hr connection. Luang Prabang handles most leisure packages.
By rail — Once in Laos, the Laos-China Railway (opened 2021) links Vientiane Parkway station to Vang Vieng (2.5 hrs) and Luang Prabang (2 hrs from Vang Vieng); tickets USD 8-20, book on LCR app or at station. No rail connection from India.
By road — Cross into Laos from Nong Khai, Thailand over the Friendship Bridge into Vientiane; overnight bus Bangkok-Vientiane is roughly 12 hrs (USD 20-30), practical only for backpacker extensions after Thailand. Not recommended as a primary arrival route for packaged India travellers.

Permits & entry — Indian passport holders require a visa; two options are available. Visa on Arrival (VOA) is issued at Wattay International Airport (Vientiane), Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse Airport, and select land borders including the Thailand-Laos Friendship Bridges; the fee is USD 35–42 for Indian nationals — bring 1–2 passport photos and USD cash. The e-Visa is available at laoevisa.gov.la for USD 50 (the USD 35 rate applies only to Chinese and Vietnamese nationals under bilateral agreements and does not apply to India); it grants 30-day single-entry, remains valid for 60 days from the issue date, and officially processes in 3 working days — apply at least 5–7 days ahead to absorb delays. No inner-line or special-area permits are required for standard tourist circuits. Plain of Jars (Phonsavan) charges a per-site entry fee of LAK 10,000–30,000 (approximately USD 0.50–1.50 per site at the prevailing rate of ~21,000 LAK/USD); no advance permit is required.
