Lansdowne is one of the least-commercialised hill stations in the Garhwal Himalaya — an active military cantonment where oak-rhododendron forest, a working colonial church, and a Garhwal Rifles regimental museum coexist with near-zero hawkers or traffic. It rewards travellers who want silence, clean air, and genuine character over theme-park hill-station infrastructure.

Before you go
- Active cantonment access is unpredictable: viewpoints and lanes inside the military zone close without notice, and the War Memorial requires prior written military permission — confirm the day's intended route with your hotel each morning before setting out.
- ATMs are scarce: one SBI ATM is confirmed in Gandhi Chowk market, but it can be out of service or low on float; withdraw cash in Kotdwar before ascending and treat the in-town ATM as a backup, not the plan.
- October–November weekend bookings fill 4–6 weeks in advance due to high Delhi demand against a tiny accommodation supply; clients who book late end up staying in Kotdwar instead.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (150 km, ~4 hrs road) is the closest; Pantnagar Airport (175 km, ~4.5 hrs) is an alternative — no airport at Lansdowne, both require onward road transfer.
By rail — Kotdwar railway station (42 km, ~1.5 hrs by taxi) is the railhead; trains from Delhi's Haridwar line take ~7 hrs (Ranikhet Express dep. 22:40, arr. ~05:30 Kotdwar); pre-book taxi from Kotdwar (₹700–900).
By road — ~265 km from Delhi via NH-534 through Najibabad and Kotdwar; 6–7 hrs by AC cab (₹4,500–6,000 one way); ISBT Kashmiri Gate Volvo buses to Kotdwar (₹350–500, ~6 hrs), then shared jeep or taxi up the hill (₹100–900 depending on mode).

Permits & entry — Indian citizens need no inner-line or restricted-area permit for Lansdowne (Pauri Garhwal district), which lies outside any protected or border-restricted zone. Lansdowne is an active military cantonment (Garhwal Rifles Centre); certain internal roads are closed to civilians, and visiting the War Memorial inside the parade ground requires prior written permission from the military authority — arrange this in advance rather than expecting open access. Follow all posted signage and soldier instructions at all times. Uttarakhand's statutory angling season runs September 15 to May 31; fishing the Khoh River or any Uttarakhand river is legally prohibited June 1 to September 14. During the open season, fishing permits are issued by the local Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), reachable via Kotdwar; fees are typically ₹100–500 per day but vary by beat and are periodically revised — confirm the current rate locally before quoting clients a figure.
