Before you go
- Altitude hits fast: Keylong sits at 3,114 m and most travellers arrive from Manali at 2,050 m on Day 1 — insist on two acclimatisation nights in Manali and carry Diamox.
- Rohtang permit slots open at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM IST only — there is no midnight release — and peak-weekend petrol slots sell out within minutes; book the moment the portal refreshes (up to 6 days ahead) or route via the Atal Tunnel instead.
- Rohtang is completely closed every Tuesday for NGT maintenance: no permits are issued and no vehicles cross; if a Tuesday falls on a travel day, use the Atal Tunnel or reschedule.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Fly to Bhuntar (Kullu) airport — 3.5 hrs by road to Keylong via Atal Tunnel; or Chandigarh airport — 9 hrs via Manali. No commercial flights into Lahaul itself.
By rail — Chandigarh (Kalka) or Ambala Cantonment are the practical railheads; 9–10 hrs by road to Keylong via Mandi and Manali. Jogindernagar narrow-gauge terminates 5 hrs short.
By road — Manali to Keylong: 116 km, ~2.5 hrs via Atal (Rohtang) Tunnel — open year-round. Old Rohtang Pass road: 51 km over the 3,978 m pass, NGT permit required, ~4 hrs. Shimla–Kaza–Kunzum La route adds a 3-day Spiti loop approach.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require no Inner Line or Protected Area Permit for Lahaul. Rohtang Pass (old road) requires an NGT e-permit booked at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in; the fee is ₹550 per vehicle (₹500 permit + ₹50 congestion charge) for all private cars and jeeps regardless of fuel type, with approximately 1,200 daily slots (800 petrol, 400 diesel) released in two equal batches at 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM IST, bookable up to six days in advance — peak-weekend petrol slots sell out within minutes of each window opening; Rohtang closes entirely every Tuesday for NGT-mandated maintenance. Vehicles entering Lahaul-Spiti via the Atal Tunnel (no Rohtang permit required) must complete a free e-Aagman vehicle registration at eaagman.hp.gov.in before arrival; skipping it risks being turned back at the checkpost. Chandratal carries a Forest Department entry levy of ₹150 per Indian national per visit, collected in cash at Batal checkpost — this is a per-entry fee, not a per-night camping charge — and camping directly at the lake shore is banned under Ramsar wetland rules; commercial camps operate 3–5 km away. Kunzum La typically closes with the first heavy October snowfall, sometimes as early as 5 October, and reopens late May to June; reconfirm timing with BRO or local operators as dates vary by two to three weeks year to year.
