Kyrgyzstan

Central Asia / Kyrgyzstan · 800 m (Bishkek) to 3 800 m (high passes)

Nomadic yurts, turquoise alpine lakes, and Silk Road ruins — Central Asia's wildest landscape at a fraction of the price of the Alps.

Kyrgyzstan delivers the Himalayan mountain-nomad experience without the crowds or permits of Nepal — vast Tian Shan ranges, sky-blue lakes above 3000 m, and families who still live in felt yurts May through September. For Indian travellers it is genuinely off-beat, affordable, and visa-easy.

What you'll see & do

The sights worth the trip, and how to spend the days around them.

To see

  • Issyk-Kul Lake — 180 km-long alpine lake at 1606 m, often called the 'Pearl of Central Asia'
  • Song-Kul Lake — remote high-altitude plateau lake at 3016 m ringed by nomad yurts
  • Ala-Archa National Park — glaciated gorge 40 km from Bishkek with trekking to 4000 m
  • Tash Rabat — 15th-century Silk Road stone caravanserai in a remote valley near the China border

To do

  • Overnight yurt stay with CBT (Community Based Tourism) nomadic families at Song-Kul or Kochkor
  • Multi-day trekking in Ala-Archa or Karakol Valley toward Palatka or Altyn Arashan hot springs
  • Horse riding on the Song-Kul plateau — half-day or full-day with nomad guides
  • Eagle hunting demonstration near Bokonbayevo on Issyk-Kul south shore

Before you go

  • No direct flights from India — all routings connect via Dubai or Istanbul, adding 3–5 hours; July–August fares spike 30–40%, so book at least 3 months ahead.
  • Song-Kul, Tash Rabat, and most high mountain passes are snow-locked from October through late April; the Song-Kul road typically opens only in late May, and Karakol Valley routes can close even in May after late snowfall.
  • Altitude sickness is a real risk above 3,000 m — Song-Kul sits at 3,016 m and Dolon Pass at 3,030 m; brief clients to ascend in stages and carry Diamox.

Getting there, permits & day trips

By air — No direct India–Bishkek (FRU) service. Best connections: flydubai via Dubai (~9–10 hrs total, 2–3 weekly); Turkish Airlines via Istanbul (~11–13 hrs total, daily); Air Arabia via Sharjah. Fares from Delhi typically ₹25–45k return. Almaty (Kazakhstan) as an alternate gateway then 5-hr road transfer.

By rail — No practical rail link from India to Kyrgyzstan; Trans-Caspian rail is multi-day and requires multiple visas — not viable for holidays.

By road — Not viable from India. Overland entry from Kashgar (China) via Torugart Pass is summer-only, requires a Chinese visa plus a special border permit arranged weeks in advance through a licensed Kyrgyz operator.

On a Driftibo trip we handle the transfers.

Permits & entry — Indian ordinary-passport holders must obtain a Kyrgyz e-visa before departure — there is no visa-on-arrival and no visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passports. Apply through the official Sapar Visa portal (evisa.e-gov.kg): Kyrgyzstan unified all tourist visa categories under the Sapar Visa system on 22 January 2025; a single-entry tourist e-visa costs approximately USD 30–40 (confirm current fee on the portal) with 3–5 business-day processing — apply at least two weeks before departure. One narrow exception: Indian nationals holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen, US, or UK visa of at least 3-year validity on the same passport may enter visa-free for up to 7 days, but only at Manas International Airport by air — this exemption does not cover land borders or other air ports of entry. Holders of Indian diplomatic or official/service passports enter visa-free; verify current policy at mfa.gov.kg and evisa.e-gov.kg before ticketing. The standard tourist circuit (Bishkek, Issyk-Kul, Song-Kul, Karakol, Tash Rabat) requires no inner-line or protected-area permits. Torugart Pass (China border) requires both a valid Chinese visa and a Kyrgyz border-zone permit obtained through a registered local operator at least 10 calendar days in advance (standard processing USD 70; urgent 2–3-day processing USD 120) — carry the original paper permit at all military checkpoints, as copies are not accepted.

Day trips nearby

  • Burana Tower + Chon-Kemin Valley — 90 km, 2 hrs; medieval ruins + scenic river valley
  • Issyk-Kul north shore (Cholpon-Ata) — 200 km, 3 hrs from Bishkek; beach + petroglyphs
  • Almaty, Kazakhstan — 5 hrs by shared taxi or 1-hr flight; pairs naturally as a 2-day extension
