Khajjiar is a rare high-altitude saucer meadow with a natural glacial lake containing a small floating peat island — the only such landform in India. Dense deodar canopy, easy paragliding, pony rides, and a close Himalayan horizon deliver a compact mountain hit that families and couples absorb in two to three days without altitude-sickness concerns.

Before you go
- The meadow is fully walkable in about two hours; clients expecting multiple days of new terrain will need Dalhousie and Chamba added to the itinerary.
- Day-trippers from Pathankot and Dalhousie crowd the meadow between 10 am and 4 pm on Saturdays and public holidays; book weekday arrivals or reach the site by 8 am.
- There is no ATM in Khajjiar village; the nearest cash point is in Dalhousie, and UPI connectivity is unreliable at the meadow — clients must carry sufficient INR.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Nearest airports: Gaggal/Kangra (DHM) ~130 km / 4 hrs by road; Amritsar (ATQ) ~220 km / 5 hrs. No direct service — connect via Delhi or Chandigarh.
By rail — Pathankot Junction (PGH) is the gateway — ~90 km / 3 hrs by road. Well connected to Delhi (Pathankot Express, ~9 hrs), Amritsar (1.5 hrs). Narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway ends at Jogindernagar (longer route).
By road — From Delhi: ~540 km / 10-11 hrs via NH44 to Pathankot then NH154 via Banikhet and Dalhousie. From Chandigarh: ~340 km / 7 hrs. Dalhousie to Khajjiar: 23 km / 45 min on a well-paved but winding hill road.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require no inner-line or restricted-area permit (PAP/RAP) for Khajjiar or anywhere in Chamba district. Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary charges approximately Rs 200–250 per person in forest entry fees plus a mandatory guide fee, both collected at the gate — reconfirm the current figure before quoting clients. The sanctuary is closed to visitors every Monday. The Dalhousie–Khajjiar road (via Lakkarmandi) can be blocked for days to several weeks after heavy snowfall; January and February are peak closure months, but blockages have been recorded in December and in June (a June 2026 snowfall cut the route), and severe winters have seen the road blocked for up to two months — always check HP PWD / HP Road & Bridges advisories before departure. NH-154A (Pathankot–Chamba–Banikhet corridor) is subject to monsoon landslides that have caused full carriageway collapse and multi-day blockages during August cloudbursts. No entry restrictions apply at Khajji Nag temple beyond removing footwear and dressing modestly.
