Before you go
- Budget kettuvallams dump grey and black water directly into the lake; always book a Kerala Tourism Department-classified boat (Silver, Gold, or Diamond tier — the older Green Palm Certificate has been superseded, and any operator using the label 'Green Leaf' should be questioned, as no such official classification exists). Classified boats must carry on-board bio-treatment and waste holding tanks; the price premium over unclassified boats is real, though a figure of ₹2,000–4,000 per night is indicative only and may be out of date — reconfirm before quoting clients.
- The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is traditionally held on the second Saturday of August but is subject to postponement (the 2024 race was moved to 28 September due to the Wayanad landslides). On race day, Punnamada Lake is cleared of all water traffic, boating from the DTPC jetty to the lake is suspended from 10 AM, and Alleppey town roads face restrictions from 6 AM to 7 PM; houseboat prices spike sharply around the event. Avoid the period unless clients are specifically attending; if they are, book accommodations 3–4 months ahead.
- Houseboat and resort rates rise 30–50% above rack rates from 24 December to 5 January; routing clients to mid-November or early October delivers comparable conditions at standard prices.

- Day 1: Arrive Alleppey by noon, board kettuvallam houseboat, cruise Punnamada Lake and into Vembanad, sunset on deck, overnight aboard

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Cochin International Airport (COK) is the main gateway — ~85 km / 1.5-2 hrs to Alleppey by road; Trivandrum (TRV) serves the Kollam end, ~155 km / 3 hrs to Alleppey
By rail — Alleppey (Alappuzha) station is on the Kochi–Trivandrum mainline; Ernakulam Junction (Kochi) is the major hub, 1.5 hrs by train; frequent Janshatabdi/Kerala Express from both ends
By road — NH66 coastal highway from Kochi to Alleppey is 85 km, ~2 hrs by taxi (₹1,800-2,200); Trivandrum to Alleppey ~155 km, 3.5-4 hrs; KSRTC buses run hourly from Kochi KSRTC stand

Permits & entry — No permits are required for Indian citizens; no inner-line or restricted-area permit applies anywhere in the Kerala Backwaters. Temple dress codes at major shrines are strict: men must wear dhoti/mundu only — full-length trousers are explicitly barred at Padmanabhaswamy Temple (Trivandrum) and Guruvayur, and some temples additionally require men to be bare-chested. Women must wear a saree or mundum-neriyathum at the strictest shrines including Padmanabhaswamy; salwar kameez is accepted at many but not all major temples; shorts and sleeveless tops are barred across all major shrines. Houseboats are classified by Kerala's Department of Tourism (not the DTPC) under a Silver / Gold / Diamond tier system, which has superseded the earlier Green Palm Certificate; there is no official "Green Leaf" classification. Silver, Gold, and Diamond boats are required to carry on-board bio-treatment and waste holding tanks; unclassified boats have no such obligation. For peak-season travel (December–January), book quality houseboats 4–6 weeks ahead; for the Christmas–New Year window specifically, allow 8–10 weeks.
