Before you go
- Periodic hartals (shutdowns) called at short notice can ground all transport for 6–24 hours; build a buffer day into every itinerary, buy refundable tickets, and check travel advisories within 72 hours of departure.
- Houseboat touts operate aggressively at SXR airport and Dal Lake ghat; fix accommodation before arriving and refuse to follow unsolicited helpers who collect commissions from property owners.
- Gulmarg Gondola queues run 2–4 hours in May–June and October without a priority pass; arrive at the base station by 7 am or pre-book through the GCCL website.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Sheikh ul Alam Airport (SXR), Srinagar — 1.5 hr from Delhi, 2 hr from Mumbai; multiple daily IndiGo/Air India/SpiceJet flights; book 3–4 weeks ahead for Apr–Jun and Sep–Oct or prices spike
By rail — No rail to Srinagar yet (Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla line under construction); nearest functional railheads are Banihal (SVDK, ~4 hr drive) or Jammu Tawi (JAT, ~8 hr drive via NH44)
By road — From Jammu via NH44 (Banihal Tunnel): 270 km, 7–9 hr by taxi/shared sumo — scenic but landslide-prone Jul–Aug; from Delhi 850 km, 2-day drive; Srinagar–Gulmarg 51 km (1.5 hr); Srinagar–Pahalgam 95 km (2.5 hr); Srinagar–Sonamarg 87 km (2.5 hr)

Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no Inner Line Permit or Restricted Area Permit for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Yusmarg, Gurez Valley, or Lolab Valley; carry government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar or passport) at all times as army checkposts operate on every highway and at some town entries, and border-district checkposts at Gurez/Bandipora and Lolab/Kupwara will record your details though no advance application is required. The Amarnath Yatra (57 days, July–August) requires separate SASB registration, which opens mid-April at a Rs 150 fee, plus a Compulsory Health Certificate from an authorised doctor issued on or after the date SASB specifies (April 8 in 2026); government hospitals may not charge for this certificate. Foreign nationals need no restricted-area permit for the main valley; for Gurez Valley, permission must be sought from the DC Office Bandipora at least 3–4 days in advance, with OCI holders facing fewer restrictions but still advised to notify the office. No formal permit process currently exists for foreign nationals visiting Lolab Valley/Kupwara — confirm the position with the DC Kupwara office before arrival as this may change. Pakistani nationals must register with the FRRO/FRO within 24 hours of arrival; all other foreign visitors on tourist or e-visas do not require FRRO registration unless the stay exceeds 180 consecutive days (revised rule, 2025–26), and hotels file Form C on guests' behalf to cover routine reporting for short stays.

- Yusmarg — 47 km south; gentle pine meadow perfect for family picnics; easy pony rides
- Wullar Lake & Bandipora — 60 km north; Asia's largest freshwater lake; combine with Gurez Valley drive (permit needed)
- Kokernag — 80 km south; Mughal spring garden and trout-fishing streams; en route to Pahalgam
