Kamakhya, Guwahati

Nilachal Hill, Guwahati, Assam · ~78 m

India's most powerful tantric Shakti Peetha, where goddess worship is raw and ancient — Kamakhya pulls pilgrims and seekers alike with blood-red hibiscus, drumbeats at dawn, and the world's most atmospheric temple hilltop above a silver Brahmaputra.

Kamakhya is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and the seat of tantric Hinduism in India — the temple's earthy rituals, goat sacrifices at the sanctum, and red-cloth offerings create a spiritual intensity found nowhere else. Guwahati doubles as the gateway to Northeast India, making it easy to pair tiger and rhino country with pilgrimage in a single trip.

What you'll see & do

The sights worth the trip, and how to spend the days around them.

To see

  • Kamakhya Temple (Nilachal Hill) — main sanctum + 10 subsidiary shrines on the hill
  • Umananda Temple on Peacock Island — Brahmaputra ferry ride required
  • Navagraha Temple — nine planetary shrines on Chitrasal Hill
  • Balaji Temple complex (Nilachal Hill lower precinct)

To do

  • Dawn Sandhi Puja darshan at Kamakhya — queue by 4:30 am for front-row brass-bell ambience
  • Brahmaputra sunset cruise (1.5 hrs, ₹300–800 pp) with Nilachal Hill panorama
  • One-horned rhino jeep safari at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (day trip, 50 km)
  • Sualkuchi silk-weaving village tour — muga and eri looms, buy direct from weavers

Before you go

  • Ambubachi Mela (mid-June) brings 800,000–1M pilgrims with general queues exceeding 8–10 hours; VIP online darshan (₹501) is also explicitly blocked on 26–27 June (the Ambubachi reopening days), so even pre-booked VIP clients have no fast-track on those days — exclude from any non-festival itinerary.
  • VIP darshan is mandatory-online only from 15 June 2026 via mkdonline.co.in; the gate counter is permanently closed — clients must pre-book and carry their confirmation on their phone, as no on-site purchase is possible.
  • Touts at the temple base run two scams: fake 'VIP passes' sold in person for ₹200–500, and fake lookalike websites mimicking mkdonline.co.in — brief clients to use only the exact URL mkdonline.co.in and to refuse any QR code from strangers outside the gate.
