Before you go
- Reaching both the Treasury and the Monastery in a single day covers 14–16 km with 500 m of elevation gain — budget 8–9 hours and wear proper hiking shoes, not sandals.
- The Jordan Pass must be purchased at jordanpass.jo before clearing immigration at Amman airport; buying it after entry means the JD 40 visa fee has already been paid separately with no refund, and third-party reseller sites charge a markup over the official price.
- Petra by Night now costs JD 30 per person (nearly doubled from JD 17 in May 2025), runs Sunday through Thursday only (not the older Mon/Wed/Thu schedule), and tickets are sold exclusively at the Petra Visitor Center kiosk — arriving at the Siq without a ticket and a same-day daytime entry or Jordan Pass means no admission.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Royal Jordanian flies Delhi–Amman direct ~5h 30min (3–4x weekly); Mumbai via RJ or Emirates/Air Arabia via Dubai ~7–9h total; Aqaba has its own airport (King Hussein Intl) with budget ME carriers. Book direct RJ for Jordan Pass visa synergy.
By rail — No rail connection from India to Jordan; not applicable for this route.
By road — Not feasible from India; within Jordan rent a car in Amman for King's Highway (manual fine; 4WD recommended for Wadi Rum tracks). Taxis and JETT buses connect major sites but schedules are rigid.

Permits & entry — Indian passport holders receive a single-entry visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport (Amman) and Aqaba airport for JD 40 (~₹4,800 at mid-2026 rates). The Jordan Pass (buy online before travel at jordanpass.jo — approximately $99–$113 / JOD 70–80 depending on the number of Petra days selected) waives this visa fee entirely, provided the holder stays a minimum of 2 whole nights (3 days) in Jordan; it also covers 40+ attractions including Petra and must be purchased before clearing immigration. No inner-line or restricted-area permits are required anywhere in Jordan. Petra operates on two seasonal schedules: summer (March 2–October 1) opens 6:00 am, closes 6:00 pm; winter (October 2–March 1) opens 6:30 am, closes 5:00 pm. Petra by Night tickets cost JD 30 per person (raised from JD 17 in May 2025), run Sunday through Thursday at 8:30 pm, are sold only at the Petra Visitor Center kiosk (not at the Siq gate), and require a same-day daytime entry ticket or Jordan Pass.
