Jibhi
Tirthan Valley, Kullu · Himachal Pradesh, India · 2,050–2,200 m
A cedar-draped secret valley where the Tirthan runs ice-cold past your balcony and the only traffic jam is a herd of goats crossing the wooden bridge.
Jibhi is Himachal's last genuinely unhurried valley — no mall roads, no DJ nights, no overtourism — just a UNESCO-buffered Great Himalayan National Park on one side, a medieval tower village on the other, and the sound of a trout stream underfoot. It suits travellers who want wilderness proximity without trekking permits or altitude acclimatisation headaches.

What you'll see & do
The sights worth the trip, and how to spend the days around them.
To see
- Jalori Pass (3,120 m) — meadow saddle with panoramic Himalayan arc, 30 min drive from Jibhi
- Serolsar Lake — sacred forest lake 5 km walk beyond Jalori Pass, deity Budhi Nagin shrine
- Chehni Kothi (Chehni Tower) — 7-storey 17th-century Kath-Kuni fort-tower in Chehni village
- Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP) — UNESCO WH site; Tirthan buffer-zone accessible without core permit
To do
- Trout fishing on the Tirthan and Jibhi rivers (HP Fisheries permit, catch-and-release encouraged)
- Trek to Serolsar Lake via Jalori Pass (14 km return, moderate, no guide needed)
- GHNP Tirthan buffer-zone guided nature walk (Rola Gaad entry; mandatory local guide)
- Chehni Kothi village hike (3 km one-way, deodar forest, traditional architecture)
Before you go
- Jibhi village has no ATM; carry a minimum of ₹5,000 cash, as the nearest ATM is in Banjar (~9 km) and it runs dry during May long weekends — withdraw in Banjar or Aut before entering the valley.
- Mobile coverage is near-absent in Jibhi itself; BSNL picks up sporadic 2G near the Jalori Pass summit but not reliably in the valley — brief clients and emergency contacts before arrival.
- Jalori Pass road closures December–March are frequent and prolonged, with documented shutdowns of 45+ consecutive days; check HP PWD road status 48 hours before travel, not just HRTC bus schedules.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Bhuntar Airport (KUU, Kullu-Manali) is nearest — ~45 min drive to Jibhi; daily flights from Delhi (~55 min); limited IndiGo/SpiceJet capacity, books out in May. Chandigarh (CHD) is the fallback with more frequencies — 5.5 hrs road.
By rail — No direct rail. Nearest useful railheads: Jogindernagar (narrow-gauge terminus, 80 km / ~3 hrs road) or Chandigarh (230 km / ~5.5 hrs road). Book a taxi or Himachal HRTC bus onward from either.
By road — From Delhi ~480 km via NH44 → Chandigarh → Mandi → Aut tunnel → Banjar → Jibhi; 10–12 hrs by private cab. Volvo overnight bus to Aut junction (~10 hrs, ₹800–1,200) then local taxi 40 min to Jibhi. Aut tunnel (paid) saves ~45 min vs the older Larji–Sainj road.
On a Driftibo trip we handle the transfers.
Permits & entry — Indian nationals need no inner-line or protected-area permit for Jibhi village, Jalori Pass, or Serolsar Lake. The GHNP ecozone and buffer zone — including the Tirthan riverside trails accessible from Gushaini — are free and open access for all visitors; no entry permit or guide is required. The GHNP core zone requires a permit: ₹100/day for Indian nationals, ₹400/day for foreign nationals, with a registered guide mandatory for multi-day treks. Permits are issued at the Shairopa range office (Tirthan side) or the GHNP head office in Shamshi; same-day walk-in permits are generally available at the gate. Trout fishing requires a separate permit of ₹300/day per rod; the season runs March 1–October 31 with a bag limit of 6 fish per day (minimum 25 cm); permits are available from the Fisheries range office in Banjar or via the HP Fisheries portal (himachal.nic.in/fisheries or himachalfisheries.csccloud.in). The Jalori Pass road frequently closes December through March, sometimes for weeks at a stretch — reconfirm HP PWD road status before quoting itineraries for those months.
