Hampi is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire (1336–1565 CE) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — over 1,600 monuments scattered across a 26 sq km field of granite boulders beside the Tungabhadra River. It uniquely combines world-class archaeology, a bouldering mecca, and one of India's most otherworldly landscapes in a single compact site.

Before you go
- Heat is punishing April through June; the ruins are fully exposed with zero shade, and even in October temperatures reach 32°C by 11am — all sightseeing should be finished by noon.
- North-bank (Virupapur Gaddi) accommodation has been largely permanently demolished: Supreme Court heritage-protection orders triggered the razing of 21 guesthouses and restaurants in 2020, with further demolitions in 2024, leaving almost no bookable accommodation there in any season — direct clients to Sanapur village, Anegondi, Kadirampura, or Hospet.
- Hampi village accommodation is sparse and fills 6–8 weeks ahead in the November–January peak; late bookings push clients into Hospet, which substantially diminishes the atmosphere.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Nearest: Vidyanagar (Jindal) Airport (VDY) ~55km/1.5hrs by taxi — limited connectivity, mainly Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Practical gateway: Bengaluru (BLR) ~350km/6-7hrs by road or overnight bus; Hubli (HBX) ~160km/3hrs with better frequency.
By rail — Hospet Junction (HPT), 13km from Hampi — 30-40min by auto (₹200-250) or bus. Key trains: Hampi Express 16591 from Bengaluru (KSR) departs ~22:00, arrives ~07:00 (9hrs, ₹350 sleeper/₹950 3AC); Hyderabad via Kacheguda ~9hrs; Goa/Vasco ~12hrs on 17315.
By road — Bengaluru: 350km, 6-7hrs (KSRTC sleeper bus ₹600-900, or private cab ₹6,000-7,500). Hyderabad: 380km, 7hrs. Goa: 370km, 7hrs. Local: autos charge ₹20-30/km; bicycle rental in Hampi village ₹100-150/day.

Permits & entry — No permit is required for Indian nationals; Hampi is an open ASI monument zone with no inner-line, protected-area, or restricted-zone clearance needed anywhere in the World Heritage Area. Two separate day-tickets cover the major enclosures: Vittala Temple complex ₹30 (Indian), and the Royal Enclosure (Zenana Enclosure / Lotus Mahal / Elephant Stables) ₹40 (Indian) — total ₹70 if visiting both zones on the same day. E-tickets can be booked in advance at asi.payumoney.com, which is advisable on weekends and during the February Utsav. As of April 2026, the Union Ministry of Culture has removed all camera fees at ASI sites, including the former ₹25 video-camera charge at Vittala; Indian nationals pay no camera fee at any Hampi ASI monument. Virupaksha Temple has free entry as an active place of worship; outer precincts are open to all, inner-sanctum access for non-Hindus is at the priests' discretion, and footwear must be removed at the gate. Coracle crossings to the north bank (Anegondi / former Virupapur Gaddi area) are suspended approximately July–September when the Tungabhadra is in spate — reconfirm exact closure window locally before quoting.
