Ha Giang is the last raw edge of mainland Southeast Asia — a UNESCO karst geopark where Hmong, Dao, and Lo Lo villages cling to cliffs above turquoise river gorges. Unlike Sapa, it has no cable cars or resort hotels; the loop is still close enough to real that a Sunday market means livestock, not curio stalls.

Before you go
- The border-zone permit is required from Day 1 and covers all four districts (Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac); get it at Ha Giang city's Immigration/Police Office before departing — cost is ~200,000–250,000 VND (~USD 10, ≈₹830) per person, and enforcement has actively tightened since June 2026.
- Apply for your Vietnam e-Visa at evisa.gov.vn (not the deprecated evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn); single entry costs USD 25, multiple entry USD 50, and during peak season allow 5–7 working days rather than the nominal 3 — carry a printed copy of the approval to show at the airport and the Ha Giang permit desk.
- Monsoon season (Jun–Aug) brings landslides that close single-lane cliff roads for 1–4 days at a time with no alternate exit, collapsing itineraries and making refunds difficult to recover.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Fly Delhi/Mumbai → Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN): 4–5 hr direct (IndiGo, Air India, Vietnam Airlines); Hanoi is the only practical air entry. From Hanoi, overnight sleeper bus to Ha Giang is 6–7 hr (departs ~9 PM, arrives ~4–5 AM; ₹600–900).
By rail — No direct rail to Ha Giang. Hanoi → Tuyen Quang by train (3 hr) then shared van 2 hr north is an option but slower than the bus. Use Hanoi as the rail hub for broader Vietnam legs; road-transfer onward to Ha Giang.
By road — Ha Giang is 300 km north of Hanoi via QL2 highway; 6–7 hr by hired car/jeep (₹5,000–7,000 one-way) or 7–8 hr overnight sleeping bus. The loop itself is ~350 km and takes 3–5 riding days.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require a Vietnam e-Visa before arrival; apply at evisa.gov.vn (the old portal evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn was deprecated November 2024). Fee is USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry, both valid up to 90 days; allow 5–7 working days during peak season rather than the nominal 3. A separate border-zone travel permit is mandatory for all four northern districts on the loop — Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac (Lung Cu, the northernmost flagpole, falls within Dong Van district) — and must be in hand before departing Ha Giang city, since checkpoints begin at Quan Ba on Day 1. Obtain it at the Immigration/Police Office in Ha Giang city (commonly 346 Nguyen Trai St); licensed operators and guesthouses routinely process it on your behalf the same morning, but it cannot be arranged en route. Current cost is approximately 200,000–250,000 VND (~USD 10, ≈₹830) per person; enforcement has tightened since June 2026 — carry your passport at all checkpoints on the loop. No permit is needed for Ha Giang city itself; monsoon-season road closures (Jun–Aug) are administrative, not permit-related — reconfirm conditions with local operators before departure.
