Gurez is one of the last valleys in J&K that still feels genuinely remote — timber-and-stone Dard Shin hamlets, trout-choked Kishanganga, and ridge lines touching Pakistan. The Inner Line Permit thins the crowd to self-selecting adventurers and photographers, keeping the place honest.

Before you go
- Razdan Pass can close without warning after a single heavy snowfall, stranding visitors for 1–3 days with no advance notice; build buffer nights into every itinerary.
- The J&K Bank ATM in Dawar is frequently non-functional; withdraw full trip cash in Srinagar or Bandipora before entering the valley.
- JIO and BSNL postpaid may work in Dawar's main area but data is negligible beyond it; download offline maps and all content before entering the valley.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Fly to Srinagar (SXR); then 5–6 hr by road (125 km) via Bandipora → Tragbal → Razdan Pass → Dawar. Pre-book a private cab (Innova/Ertiga ~₹3,500–4,500 one way); no shared transport from Srinagar directly.
By rail — Nearest railhead is Banihal on the Udhampur–Banihal broad-gauge line; Banihal to Srinagar ~2.5 hr by road/bus, then 5–6 hr onward to Gurez — total ~8–9 hr from Banihal. Jammu Tawi to Banihal by train ~3.5 hr.
By road — From Srinagar: NH 703D via Bandipora; Razdan Pass (3,490 m) is the only road, single-lane in sections, open roughly late May–October. Drive time 5–6 hr; convoy timings sometimes enforced by BRO on narrow stretches.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require no Inner Line Permit or other formal permit for Gurez Valley; carry original Aadhaar or Voter ID and the army registers you via a barcode entry-exit system at the Tragbal checkpoint on both entry and exit — no SDM or DC office visit, no permit paper to collect before travel. As of February 2025, foreign tourists may visit: apply by email to the DC Bandipora 3–4 days before arrival with a passport bio-page scan, a passport photo, and a basic itinerary; the DC-issued permit replaces the previous MHA-clearance route entirely. DC permits are not guaranteed and can be denied, so build buffer days into any foreign-national itinerary. Razdan Pass is BRO-managed and typically open late May to late October, but can close abruptly after unseasonal snowfall with no advance notice and reopen unpredictably — a closure was reported as late as May 2025; reconfirm current road status before quoting specific dates. Photography of military installations, checkpoints, and LoC-adjacent positions is prohibited under the Official Secrets Act; the "500 m" perimeter cited in travel blogs has no clear statutory basis, and the prohibition is applied at soldiers' discretion — treat any visible army post, bunker, or checkpoint as a strict no-photography zone.
