Dzükou Valley is Nagaland's living painting — a bowl of mist-hung meadows blanketed each monsoon by the rare endemic Dzükou lily, edged by bamboo groves and fed by a clear mountain stream. Trail-access only, zero phone signal, and a silence broken only by wind and Blyth's tragopan make it the purest off-grid experience in Northeast India.

Before you go
- ILP must be obtained online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in (₹200 per person, 30-day validity) before departure; the system has been online-only since 1 January 2025 and on-arrival collection at Kohima DC offices is not a reliable option.
- The trail is acutely dangerous in peak monsoon (Jul–Aug): conditions include heavy rainfall, leeches, and active landslide risk — the same window when Dzükou lilies are in bloom; gaiters, trekking poles, and a local guide are non-negotiable.
- Valley rest-house accommodation is managed by Viswema and Jakhama Village Councils — dormitory-style with shared rooms, bare mats, no electricity, and no heating; capacity is extremely limited and books out weeks in advance for Jun–Sep, so carry a tent as a realistic backup.

- Day 1: Fly Dimapur (DIU); 3 h drive Kohima; collect ILP; Kohima War Cemetery and local market.
- Day 2: 45 min drive Viswema trailhead; 5 h ascent to Dzükou Valley; overnight forest-dept rest house.
- Day 3: Dawn lily-meadow walk, Dzükou stream; 5 h descent to Viswema; drive Dimapur for evening flight.
5-day plan
- Day 1: Arrive Dimapur; ILP collection; drive Kohima; settle in, Naga cuisine dinner.
- Day 2: Kohima — War Cemetery, Nagaland State Museum, Naga Bazaar craft shopping.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — Dimapur Airport (DIU) — daily IndiGo/Air India from Kolkata (55 min) and Guwahati (40 min); then 3 h road to Kohima via NH-29.
By rail — Dimapur Railway Station (NF Railway) — trains from Guwahati (5–6 h) and Kolkata (28–32 h); then 3 h shared sumo or taxi to Kohima.
By road — Kohima to Viswema trailhead: 45 min by shared sumo/taxi (₹50–80 shared, ₹400–600 private); register ILP at Jakhama forest checkpost (12 km from Kohima) en route — no direct public bus to trailhead.

Permits & entry — Indian nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nagaland — apply online at ilp.nagaland.gov.in (₹200 per person; 30-day validity); the ILP system has been fully online since 1 January 2025, so apply before departure and do not rely on collecting it at Kohima DC offices on arrival. A Tourist Information Centre–cum–ILP Facilitation Counter at Dimapur Airport arrivals hall can issue offline tourist ILPs as a temporary fallback only. Present the ILP at the Jakhama forest checkpost (approximately 16–18 km south of Kohima on the Imphal highway) before trekking, and register again at the valley entry point. Foreign nationals additionally require a Protected Area Permit (PAP), applied for individually via the e-FRRO portal at indianfrro.gov.in/frro; the PAP was reinstated by MHA from March 2025 after a prior relaxation period — reconfirm current status before quoting. Typical e-FRRO processing is 3–7 working days, but can extend to 2–3 weeks during peak periods, so apply at least three weeks before departure. Operators approaching from the Manipur side via Mao/Senapati must obtain a separate Manipur ILP at manipurilponline.mn.gov.in.
