Before you go
- Armenia-Azerbaijan borders are closed and relations remain hostile; Georgia (Tbilisi) is the only viable Caucasus add-on, and any client asking for a Caucasus triangle itinerary must be briefed on this before quoting.
- Baku's khazri (cold north wind) and Absheron summer dust make July-August feel harsher than the 32 degrees C headline temperature suggests, and the Caspian shore is pebbly with limited beach infrastructure — clients expecting a conventional beach holiday will be disappointed.
- Azerbaijani Manat is nearly impossible to source in India — a handful of forex services (MakeMyTrip, Orient Exchange) list AZN but with unreliable stock — so advise clients to carry USD or EUR and exchange on arrival at the airport or city booths, as ATMs dispense Manat only.

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — AZAL (Azerbaijan Airlines) flies Delhi–Baku direct: ~3.5 hrs, 4-5 weekly departures; IndiGo and Air Arabia route via Dubai adding a 2-3 hr layover (8-9 hrs total); Mumbai connects via Dubai or Istanbul (9-11 hrs total). Heydar Aliyev International Airport is 25 km from central Baku; taxi ~25 min, ₹800-1,200.
By rail — No direct rail from India. Within Azerbaijan: Baku–Sheki overnight train (6 hrs, scenic but slow) or shared taxi/marshrutka (4.5 hrs, ₹400-600 pp) is more practical. Baku's metro covers the city centre.
By road — Road entry from India not practical. Within Azerbaijan, shared taxis (marshrutkas) efficiently link Baku to Sheki, Quba, Ganja, and Gobustan at ₹200-600 pp per leg; private car hire ~₹3,500-5,000/day with driver.

Permits & entry — Indians require an e-visa before arrival; no visa on arrival exists. Apply only through the official ASAN Visa portal (evisa.gov.az) for a total of USD 23 (USD 20 state fee + USD 3 mandatory service charge); third-party services such as iVisa and Atlys charge USD 29 or more due to their own markup. Standard processing takes up to 3 working days; urgent processing (3 hours) costs an additional USD 30. The e-visa grants a 30-day single-entry stay and is valid for 90 days from the date of issue — do not apply more than roughly 80 days before travel, and allow at least 5 working days buffer before departure. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended entry date; no protected-area permits are required for standard tourist sites including Gobustan and Sheki. Any evidence of a visit to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) — including border stamps obtained before Azerbaijan retook the territory in September 2023 — results in automatic entry denial, detention, and a permanent ban for all nationalities including Indian passport holders; regular Armenian entry stamps (Yerevan airport, Zvartnots, Georgian land border with Armenia) do not automatically bar entry but will trigger additional questioning and longer waits.
