Albania packs UNESCO-listed Ottoman towns, 2,500-year-old Greco-Roman ruins, and some of Europe's most dramatic alpine trekking into a compact country most Indian travellers haven't discovered yet. Infrastructure is improving fast but crowds and prices remain strikingly low — a genuine before-it-blows-up window.

Before you go
- The visa-free exemption requires a multiple-entry Schengen, US, or UK visa that has already been used at least once to enter the issuing territory — an unused or single-entry visa is rejected at the border, year-round, not just seasonally.
- The correct e-visa portal is e-visa.al; e-albania.al is a domestic citizen-services portal that cannot process foreign applications, and the official fee is EUR 15 (~USD 16) — third-party agents charge significantly more.
- ATMs are available in Tirana, Shkodër, and Sarandë but are essentially absent in mountain villages such as Theth and Valbona; clients must carry sufficient cash before heading north.

- Day 2 — Drive to Berat (2 hrs); castle complex, Onufri Museum of icons, stroll Mangalem quarter

- Day 1 — Tirana: National Museum, Dajti Mountain cable car, Blloku evening

- Day 3 — Drive south to Berat (3 hrs via Elbasan); UNESCO old town walk and castle
- Day 4 — Continue to Sarandë via Gjirokastër; citadel, bazaar, Blue Eye spring

Getting there, permits & day trips
By air — No direct flights from India; DEL/BOM → Istanbul (IST) → Tirana Nënë Tereza (TIA) via Turkish Airlines is the primary routing (~14–16 hrs total, 3–4 hr layover); Wizz Air via Vienna or Rome is a cheaper alternative at similar total time; book IST–TIA separately for better fares
By rail — No useful rail from India; within Albania the Tirana–Shkodër line (~3 hrs, USD 3) is the only passenger service but is slow and infrequent; intercity buses and shared furgon minibuses are universally preferred
By road — From Tirana by car or bus: Shkodër 2 hrs north, Berat 2 hrs south, Gjirokastër 3 hrs, Sarandë 3.5 hrs; border crossings to Montenegro at Hani i Hotit and to North Macedonia at Qafë Thanë are smooth with EU/regional plates; no direct road from India

Permits & entry — Indian passport holders are not entitled to automatic visa-free entry to Albania. Under Albanian Law No. 79/2021, Indians holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen, US, or UK visa that has been used at least once to enter the issuing country or Schengen area may enter visa-free for up to 90 days; this exemption applies year-round. A brand-new unused visa or any single-entry visa does not qualify, and border guards will refuse entry on those grounds. Without a qualifying visa, an Albanian e-visa must be obtained at e-visa.al — official fee is EUR 15 (~USD 16); standard processing takes up to 15 working days, complex cases up to 30 working days, so apply at least 4 weeks before departure. No inner-line or trekking permits are required for Theth or Valbona; however, the Theth valley road closes approximately November through late March/early April. Reconfirm current access and visa conditions at punetejashtme.gov.al or e-visa.al before ticketing.
